Architecture of the senses

„Fourth“ is a carpet designed for the Royal Library of Copenhagen. The Library is, with its black granite facade and the glass/steel construction, a product of the post-modernism architecture. This project is founded on the theories by the finish architect Juhani Pallasmaa. In his book „The Eyes of the skin“ Pallasmaa asks the far-reaching question why, when there are five senses, has one single sense – sight – become so predominant in architectural culture and design?

For this project I visited the Library on daily basis to analyze the architecture of the silent

„Reading Room East“ and the people using it. After intense observation, documentation and analysis, I noticed an interesting habit of the people, to remove shoes. This inspired me to create a carpet, which adds a feeling of comfort and warmth to the clinical-like atmosphere of „The Black Diamond“. A landscape to touch and explore with your feet to brings a different experience of the room. „Fourth“-A carpet for the haptic senses.
